Aqeela Miller

3rd Grade Teacher

I could start by saying I am excited to be the 3rd grade teacher at Charlotte Islamic Academy, but that would be an understatement. Being in an Islaamic environment and the amanah of teaching Muslim children is more like an honor and gift. AsSalaamu alaikum wa rahmatuAllaahi wa barakatuh. My name is AQeelah Miller, a proud alumna of Johnson C. Smith University located right here in Charlotte. I began my studies in the Elementary Education department; however I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Social Work and dual concentrations in Biology and Mathematics. Although Social Work is my background, teaching is my passion. I have been an educator for approximately 17 years. I have taught grades 1-4, middle school sciences, and in composite classroom settings. I have also worked as a KG-3 Literacy Coach. Teaching has taken me all around the world. My previous Islamic school experiences include Intellicor International Academy, Al-Huda School (College Park, MD) and IQRA Academy (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands).

I believe that the elementary school level is a crucial and important time in a child’s growth. Their educational foundation is being developed along with their perception of school. These years are so precious. My goal as a teacher is to give your child the tools for success in every possible way. I incorporate core subject-knowledge with Islamic beliefs to aid in giving my students the ultimate learning experience. Our deen is most perfect, and Islaam can be referenced in everything our children are learning - from Language Arts to NC History.

My dedication to children and community has earned me a few modest accolades, including recognition from Habitat for Humanity, Teacher of the Year (St. Croix, USVI), and the Finer Womanhood Award from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. My memberships in professional organizations like the NC Association of Educations, Islamic Schools League of America, NAACP and the National Association of Black Social Workers all align with my desires to make circumstances and education better for the underrepresented. When I am not in the classroom, you may find me in my backyard gardening, gaming with my amazing and ever so-cool 14 year old son Dawud, and restaurant hopping with my besties.
